Because they finish their work too late, Nancy and Jonathan spend the evening at Bauman’s. The two of them, along with Jonathan, make a generous amount of copies of the recording and package them to send to all the major newspapers. They water down the evidence, pairing the lab’s sinister deeds with a more believable subtext, like that the lab was poisoning the town’s water supply. Over time, Bauman and Nancy reach a plan. He emphasizes that truths like this one are not easily believed by the public, even if there’s evidence. Owens admits the lab’s responsibility for Barb’s death, and asks if it’s enough. She triumphantly plays him the recording, in which Dr. Bauman has been hired by Barb’s parents to continue the investigation into her disappearance, which is why Nancy has sought him out. The next day, they drive to the home of Murray Bauman, the journalist from the season opener that Hopper had roundly dismissed as a crazy conspiracy theorist. It’s clear they have a connection, but that it also confuses them. At one point, they reach out and place hands next to each other, comparing the scars they received from a year ago. They spend the evening awkwardly apart in a double room, talking about what happened to their relationship after the events from season 1.
